The cows are standing, the milk is flowing, and on paper the herd looks fine. But two months of cumulative heat stress have built an energy debt in these animals that doesn’t show up on the milk check — it shows up in October, when your fall freshening class underperforms.

The Cost the Milk Check Doesn’t Show
Butterfat depression is visible on every check. Body condition score (BCS) loss isn’t, unless you’re scoring regularly and most commercial dairies only score at dry-off and calving. That means the damage done in July and August often isn’t evaluated until those cows hit the close-up pen in September and October.
The research linking low BCS at dry-off to poor transition outcomes is well established: cows entering the close-up pen underconditioned have higher rates of subclinical ketosis, fatty liver, and displaced abomasum in the first 30 days of lactation, along with reduced colostrum quality and lower first-service conception rates. The mechanism is consistent across studies, even though the exact dollar figures vary; every one of those outcomes has a real cost, but the size of that cost depends heavily on your herd, your climate, and the specific study you’re citing. Why August Is the Month That Does the Most Damage
Heat stress in most U.S. dairy regions starts building in July and peaks in August. A cow entering August already six weeks into reduced dry matter intake, disrupted rumen fermentation, and elevated body temperature is not in the same position as a cow just starting to feel the heat. She has fewer energy reserves, a gut microbiome that’s been under stress for weeks, and reduced immune function heading into a month that also brings elevated mastitis, lameness, and early dry-off risk.
The pattern shows up clearly in herd records. That’s one farm’s data used to illustrate the method; the actual size of the drop on your operation depends on your herd, ventilation, and cooling setup, but the exercise itself (pulling your own June–August trend against your non-summer baseline) is worth running this week rather than assuming a borrowed number applies to your barn.
The Transition Period Is Where August Catches Up With You
Most operations feel the August cost in two waves. The first is the milk check, visible butterfat and volume loss in real time. The second arrives 30 to 60 days later, when the cows heat-stressed in August begin calving or entering the close-up pen.
Transition performance tracks closely with the BCS a cow arrives with. A cow at 3.0–3.25 at dry-off tends to transition well. A cow at 2.5 or below, a realistic outcome after six to eight weeks of unsupplemented heat stress in a high-producing animal, is more likely to go into negative energy balance quickly, mobilize body fat faster than her liver can process it efficiently, and peak lower in the following lactation.

The honest takeaway isn’t a single number; it’s that the direction is consistently negative, the cost compounds across a herd, and your fall freshening class coming out of an unsupplemented hot August will very likely underperform your spring class. Ask your nutritionist to model this against your own herd’s DHI and treatment records rather than a generic industry figure.

What August Supplementation Actually Protects
August supplementation does two jobs. It raises dietary energy density, so the cow mobilizes less body fat to maintain production, which slows the BCS loss that has been accumulating since June; a cow entering dry-off at 3.0 instead of 2.5, because of that support, tends to transition better, freshen stronger, and peak higher. And it supports current-lactation butterfat recovery while helping maintain the energy balance that both BCS and reproductive performance depend on.
Neither product requires a ration overhaul; both go into the TMR at the mixer. For a herd already six to eight weeks into heat stress, inclusion rates typically run somewhat higher than early-summer prevention doses, since you’re correcting a deficit rather than maintaining a baseline. Work with your nutritionist to set exact rates for your herd, but as a starting reference:
- Calcium salt of fatty acids: commonly 300–400 g/cow/day for a herd already showing a deficit; start toward the higher end if body condition loss is visually evident.
- High-C16 palmitic acid: commonly 150–200 g/cow/day, maintained through September until nighttime THI consistently drops below 68.
- Duration: don’t pull supplementation the moment temperatures drop in September; BCS recovery lags the heat event by several weeks, so the benefit of continued feeding typically extends 3–4 weeks past the last significant heat stress.
The Reproductive Cost Hiding in Your Summer Records
Heat stress affects reproduction as well as production, and its costs follow the herd into the following spring. Elevated body temperature during the follicular phase reduces oocyte quality, and published research on heat-stressed dairy cattle reports conception rate reductions ranging from roughly 15 percentage points to well over 50% relative decline, depending on the study, breeding method (AI vs. natural service), and heat load; this is a wide range, and where your herd falls in it depends on your specific conditions. Cows that fail to conceive during a heat-stress window need an additional ~21-day cycle to rebreed, and every day open has a real, herd-specific dollar cost.
To make this concrete: a 500-cow herd whose summer conception rate drops by 15 percentage points loses roughly 75 potential pregnancies across a month of breeding. At a conservative $4/day-open cost and a 21-day cycle extension, that’s on the order of $6,300 in reproductive cost in a single month, before it even shows up in your days-in-milk distribution the following January. Run this math against your own breeding records rather than treating it as a fixed industry number; the inputs (herd size, your actual conception rate drop, your actual per-day-open cost) will change the answer meaningfully.
Improved energy balance from supplementation doesn’t offset the direct thermal effect on the oocyte, but it removes one of the compounding metabolic factors that makes a hot August’s reproductive impact worse than it has to be.
Records to Pull This Week

- Milk weights by week, June 1 to today. A week-over-week decline through August means the herd hasn’t stopped losing ground.
- Butterfat trend, last three checks. A declining trend with no recovery signal means the current ration isn’t compensating for the stress load.
