Dairy cow heat stress doesn’t start with ill cows and smaller herds. Heat stress hits dairy producers through their milk check every week from July through August. By the time most farms act, it’s too late – they’ve already lost two to four weeks’ worth of margins that they can never recover.

The Margin Problem Inside Heat Stress
Heat stress in dairy cows begins at a Temperature Humidity Index value of 68. Heat stress is seen as a welfare problem for most individuals. It is an economic one. When THI exceeds 68, the cows consume less. When the consumption rate is low, the amount of energy produced is limited. When energy levels drop, there will be low energy transfer to the mammary glands.
According to the University of Florida IFAS Extension, heat stress results in annual losses of about 1.5 billion dollars for milk loss in the US dairy sector. These losses include lower volume, component level, and the recovery costs. Mostly, these losses occur in July and August when the THI of the major US dairy regions remains at 72 to 78.
Since the cost of milk is approximately 20 dollars per hundredweight while that of butterfat is 1.82 dollars per pound, the reduction in the percentage of butterfat by 0.3 units in a herd of 500 cows will mean huge monthly financial losses.
Why Cows Lose Butterfat in Summer
With an increase in the ambient temperature, there is a redirection of blood from the digestive system to the skin as a cooling mechanism. This means that the rumen will receive less blood, slowing down fermentation and thus making feed digestion less efficient. There is also decreased intake of dry matter in the range of 10-15% due to the production of heat during feeding coupled with the cooling effort.
As a consequence, dairy cattle face two nutritional challenges at once. Less energy is consumed, and the nutrients taken in are less utilized. In addition, the mammary gland requires a continuous supply of fatty acids to synthesize butterfat. With fewer C16 palmitic acid in the diet, the butterfat percentage will reduce.
This effect is described in the Journal of Dairy Science, which clearly illustrates the milk fat depression in summer herds without fat supplementation. According to studies, milk production reduces by about 0.41 kg per cow per day for each THI unit higher than 69.

How to Size the Intervention for Your Herd
Inclusion rates depend on your current ration, your herd’s production level, and how hard THI is hitting your region. These are the starting points most nutritionists use as a baseline for dairy feed supplements during summer.
- Calcium salt of fatty acids: Start at 200 to 300 grams per cow per day for moderate heat stress conditions. Move to 300 to 400 grams when THI consistently exceeds 75.
